Optimal Application Expert
Application Expert, developed by Optimal Networks, is an application analysis
tool that helps in optimizing, trouble-shooting and predicting application
response times. The tool gives users the ability to see what impact the network
has on applications (and vice-versa) before deployment. Besides being a
pre-deployment tool, Application Expert can also troubleshoot and diagnose
network and application problems after
Application Expert runs on any Windows 95 or Windows NT desktop using any
promiscuous mode Ethernet, Token Ring or FDDI card. The software behaves
like any other Windows application on the desktop.
Application Expert has the ability to capture network traffic or import trace
files gathered by both Network Associates Sniffer plus other protocol
analyzers that support the ENC, TRC, FDC, CAP and LAN capture file formats.
Application Expert organizes and stores trace files in a hierarchical MS-Access
database. Captured data is organized into applications and
tasks under a single database. For the application review process
or any other type of analysis, we can organize the traces from a single
application into a single database. Within the database, the "AE application"
level would be our transaction and the "AE task" level would be the individual
link speed tests. This allows us to organize separate traces and separate
Data Analysis Views, Reports and Tools
Application Expert generates the following views and reports for analyzing
Bounce Diagram View: A graphical view of packet flow and times for node pair
conversations during the capture
Conversation Map View: A graphical view of all conversations that occurred
between pairs of network nodes on a single task.
Response Time Breakdown View: A pie chart view of how each node affects the
overall response time of a task
Packet Trace View: A table that displays packet decodes in detail.
Time Plot View: A graphic representation of throughput (frames/sec or bits/sec)
of a task.
Payload vs. Overhead Graph View: A pie chart view of the amount of actual
data sent on a single task.
Application Overview Report: A table that gives general information (i.e.
Duration, Number of Frames, Amount of Data, Throughput) on all tasks within
a single application.
Comparison Report: A table that compares versions of applications or baselines
Thread Analysis Report: A table report that breaks down different application
Task Summary Report: A table that summarizes important task statistics
Response Time Predictor: A tool that shows the effect of changes in bandwidth,
latency, and load on an end-users response time.
